Today is International Women’s Day!

At SmartLearner Driving School we stand by the fight for gender equality across the world. Our list of female instructors is forever growing and we currently have many female instructors that teach in both manual and automatic.

However, the reality is only 1 in 4 driving instructors are female. Why not consider SmartLearners Award Winning Driving Instructor training and challenge gender stereotypes. SmartLearner is always looking for new people to join our ever-expanding roster of driving instructors. If you would be interested in becoming a driving instructor why not consider our driving instructor training?

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.

Marked annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:

    • Celebrate women’s achievements
    • Raise awareness about women’s equality
    • Lobby for accelerated gender parity
    • Fundraise for female-focused charities

Why is International Women’s Day important?

Even in 2021 we still don’t have gender equality. According to the World Economic Forum, sadly none of us will see gender parity in our lifetimes, and nor likely will many of our children. Gender parity will not be attained for almost a century.

There’s urgent work to do – and we can all play a part.

How has driving been affected in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia has recently resolved their ban on women driving. Women who drove in public risked being arrested and fined.

The Women2Drive campaign in Saudi Arabia, have been fighting for years to change this law. Manal Al-Sharif, began the campaign back in 2011. She was sent to prison after posting a YouTube video of herself driving a car.

Until now, only men were allowed driving licences, while there was no formal ban on women driving, they couldn’t drive legally either as they could not get a licence. The law was changed by 24 June 2018.

The previous leader of Saudi Arabia started relaxing some of the laws around what women could do back in 2011. But this change is said to be down to the current king’s son Mohammed Bin Salman.

Did you know?

In 1869 the National Woman Suffrage Association was formed in America, with its main goal to allow women to vote. After the victory of World War One on the 6th of February, 1918, the Representation of the People Act was brought into force. This was the first time women were allowed to vote.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, an American rights activist, held the first Woman’s Rights Convention. She called for changes to be made in law, to gain equal rights for women.

76% of healthcare and social care workers, 86% of personal care workers in health services are women.
