Coventry City of Culture Month

In light of Coventry City Culture month, UK city of culture is a competition run by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) every four years. Five cities were shortlisted for the 2021 UK City of Culture competition.

Coventry won in victory and was awarded the title in December 2017 after competing against eleven other cities from Swansea, Sunderlands and Paisley.

The bid was won on the strength of Coventry’s diversity, its youthfulness and the opportunities that being so centrally located bring. Coventry’s year in the spotlight will run from May 2021 to May 2022.

What is Coventry City of Culture?

Coventry is the city where movement began, from innovation in the aspects of the transportation industry to a history of activism. Our city has moved people for centuries.

For a whole year, we will celebrate our city with events, music, dance, theatre, and large – scale spectacles. As well as these big celebrations, the city of Coventry will undoubtedly showcase its unexpected side, with more intimate experiences and ways to get involved across every ward of the city.

And it’s not just Coventry. This celebration will see the entire region get involved and benefit from the opportunities that being a city of culture brings.

Coventry Residents

From May 2021, our reign as UK City of Culture begins. An opportunity for visitors to experience the city we know and love. In light of this, the city of Culture will be recruiting 5,000 local volunteers throughout the year, to spend as much or as little time as they can, to display and exhibit our city. Volunteers will be rewarded with limited edition uniforms, training and discounts.

City of Culture hosts will be required to provide a friendly and welcoming face for visitors, to guide visitors and event spectators, provide information about the city and events and support areas of displays and artwork.
